Months of the Year and their Origin
Yesterday I was helping a pupil with spelling the days of the week and months of the year.
We looked in the dictionary for the derivation of the words July and August. After that, he was keen to know where all the words had dervied from and surprised his Mum with his new-found knowledge. Pupils love it when they can not only learn something new, but when they can teach it to their parents!
Just out of interest, do you know where the names of the months of the year derive from?
Here are two for you:
July…..named after the Roman general Julius Caeser, who was born in this month.
November……named after Latin root novem- meaning “nine” ,the ninth month of the year in the ancient Roman calendar, which incidentally only had ten months.
